What is the right mechanism?

11/01/2018

Huddersfield Garage Doors has an extensive range of quality garage doors for every garage door requirement, and our experienced garage door fitters can help you choose the type of garage door and opening mechanism that is best for you. Here is a guide to the different mechanisms available, to help with your choice:

  • Up and over canopy garage doors. A popular garage door in the UK, up and over garage doors are available as the canopy type, or the retractable garage door. Benefits of the canopy up and over garage door are that it is simple to install, available in wood or steel, and allows for maximum opening width. Disadvantages of this garage door are that it is available for manual operation only, and requires substantial clearance outside for the opening arc, and for the canopy when open.

  • Retractable up and over garage doors. This type of garage door runs on tracks, and when open stows along the garage roof. Benefits of the retractable up and over garage door are that it is simple to operate, and can be either manual or motorised. Disadvantages are that the operating arms require space inside the garage, and it requires clearance at the front when opening, and in the roof for stowing.

  • Sectional garage doors. This type of garage door may be for you if you have limited clearance at the front of your garage, as it rises vertically, curving at the top to stow flat inside the roof of the garage. Benefits are minimum clearance requirements, and easy motorised operation. Disadvantages are that this garage door will take longer to install, and must be in a slatted design.

  • Roller garage doors. These are easy to operate, generally motorised, and allow for maximum opening width. Disadvantages are that when fully open, the door will form a roll in the roof, so space must be available above the door. This type of garage door must be constructed from slatted material, and will require a power supply.
