New housing developments

100 new homes are set to be built on Helme Lane in Meltham, after Barratt Homes secured consent from the appropriate authorities. The application was an outline, meaning the principle to build on the land has now been established, which had been previously been labelled provisional open land (POL). Kirklees Council had fought to defend the site from development, but struggled to so due to having no current planning policy in place.

Concern among residents regarding the proposed development was echoed by Kirklees Community Action Network, who say that the 200 extra cars in Helme Lane would lead to traffic congestion and pollution, while the additional residents would be a burden to the area’s already overcrowded schools.

Many residents are angered by the new development because they see Meltham Town Council’s rejection of it as a reflection of the feeling of the town’s current residents, while others have pointed out there doesn’t appear to be any need for the new homes, with 150 houses currently up for sale and existing brownfield sites in the area.

One resident, Roger Morgan, was quoted in the Huddersfield Daily Examiner as saying that his home would be surrounded by the new houses, which would lead to a ‘loss of light’, as well as complaining that the developer had only given him 24 hours’ notice of a consultation event’ which he deemed a ‘lack of courtesy’.

Barratt Homes’ Mark Jones told the newspaper that the development would not have any ‘adverse impact on the local highways’, with planning officers adding that a ‘right to light’ was of little consideration when the plans were brought forward.

Despite the seemingly unanimous belief that existing brownfield sites should be the first to be developed in the area, there appears to be nothing more that local authorities can do to stop the development.
