Easy Steps to a Safe Garage Door

Unfortunately, garage door issues have caused fatalities. In fact, about five people die every year from garage doors. This may not sound like a high number, but many more are seriously injured and even paralysed because of worn out, old or poorly installed garage doors.

In fact, a recent study showed that as many as 30,000 people were injured in 2013 because of a garage door, which is 82 people a day. Therefore, in order to limit any potential issues, make sure you take the time to carry out these simple maintenance steps once a year or when you think there might be an issue to stop any potential problems. Our leading Huddersfield garage door team have recommended some things you can do below:

Adjust the garage door opener

You may not be aware, but if you have a garage door, there will more than likely be a knob at the back of the opener, which controls the downward force. It is imperative that the downward force on the garage door is correct. If it is not, your garage door might leave a gap at the bottom, which, regardless of how small the gap is, could be a potential entry point for burglars.

Check and maintain the open force

In order to ensure the force level remains correct on both opening and closing pull the door up and when it is in the halfway, stop its movement and hold it in place. While you try to grasp the door and stop its motion, if it takes more pressure than required to hold it, or if it doesn't stop at all, then turn the control counter clockwise to decrease the amount of open force.

Gradually make adjustments until the movement of the door is smooth even when you are trying to stop it.

At the same time, if you try opening the garage door, and it does not rise more than five feet, increase the open force by turning the control clockwise. Keep adjusting the knob slightly until the door opens completely.

Adjusting the safety reverse

The last and maybe most important thing you need to check is the reverse function. Your garage door should reverse if there is an emergency and someone or something is under the door. To ensure this feature is working, place a piece of wood of reasonable size in the way of the door. If it does not reverse, increase the down limit by turning the limit clockwise about ¼ of a turn and test again until successful.

If you have children, making sure you do the above could save their lives. A child could try to run under a reversing door because they expect it to reverse or stop, but what happens if the safety is not working?

As well as a proper professional installation, timely service and repair of the garage door system is important to keep it safe. At the very least, you should ensure that you carry out these checks by yourself, but it may be better to seek a professional to help, as they will know more about the system.
